I lost my IE's capabilities. When I start it, whether IE8 or IE9 (I tried them both), the program either runs endlessly reaching nowhere, or freezing. I tried all kinds of solutions, cleaned the system with various tools, uninstalled and reinstalled IE, but found no solution. (Firefox works flawless).
There were some indications for problems with NTVDM.exe and I tried to locate the program. I failed, but instead I discovered that in my C: root directory, exists an autoexec.bat file. The only line in this file is: REM Dummy file for NTVDM Is it normal? Does it indicate a problem? Windows 7 Internet Explorer repair. At this time is evident that you fixed the problem a long ago.
I had the same problem at the same time, in 2012 (a year ago). I downloaded IE 2008 from Microsoft page (simple google search with microsoft in the request). I started the computer in SAFE MODE.
Then I went to 'Program Files' and delete the 'Internet Explorer' carpet. At this time I ran program 'CCleaner' (or similar program to clean the registry). Since the 'Internet Explorer' carpet is gone the program (registry cleaner) erase all mentions of Internet Explorer in the registry. Do not do this manually because many programs mention Internet Explorer as a link and you do not want to destroy this links. The registry cleaner only erase its registry not the other program's links. Then you can install 'IE 2008 EXE', and later IE 2009.
